Kourtaliotiko Gorge

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is the main access route to Plakias. For anyone who passes through it for the first time, it’s just amazing, whether on the bus or in the car. And as often you might pass it, it stays amazing!

In contrast to the Kotsifou Gorge further west, it impresses with its vastness and depth (including the never-ending springs at the riverbed below the road). The bounding rocky sharp slopes are dotted with vast amounts of caves. It is also a suitable place to observe vultures

The mentioned springs feed the Megalos Potamos (Great River – we may refer to it as a creek …), which flows on the Preveli beach below the monastery Preveli into the Libyan Sea. It is possible to wander throught the entire gorge, either from the sources to the mouth at Preveli beach or vice versa, though it is a little bit sophisticated.
